Starting point

Chuck Massoud's father combined an entrepreneurial spirit with loans from three friends to start Massoud Furniture in 1962. His son joined the business 23 years ago, bringing experience in banking and real estate.

The shape of things

"When we start designing a frame, we consider how it will look with a variety of fabrics and leathers. How many personalities can it take on? We want versatility - for example, the wing chair is extremely versatile. It can work in any style of décor."

The boss´ chair

"I love the Dooley wing chair. It touches all the bases: the croc-embossed leather is beautiful, it has an elegance with a little retro feel, the seat cushion is very deep so when you sit down you just melt into it."

First pitch

"We put pitch in our wing chairs - that is, we lean them back a little bit. A classic wing chair has a straight back, which isn't so comfortable."

In the round

The rise of media rooms and expanded master suites inspired Massoud's popular "cuddle chair," a round, deeply cushioned piece scaled for curling up to read or watch TV.

Tech support

In terms of furniture construction, Massoud believes modern technology is as important as traditional techniques. "Automation of certain steps, like cutting fabric, helps you put money back into things like quality materials and experienced employees. Where handcraftsmanship is important is where we use it, in shaping an arm or sewing or applying nailheads."
