Antique four-poster canopy bed is handcrafted of elm wood and carved by hand in myriad low-relief and openwork motifs finished with a deep stain and given golden accents for a stunning effect on this one-of-a-kind piece. The gridded canopy is suspended over an expansive sleeping surface of tightly woven reeds. Though the bed's dimensions do not exactly correspond to our modern system, it is comparable to a standard queen-size bed.

Narrow panels carved with openwork scrolling leaves border the top edge of canopy. "Railing" around back and sides comprises larger panels carved with openwork medallions. Base is adorned with elaborate scrollwork and serpentine dragons in low relief; each of the eight legs is carved with an expressive face and terminates in a claw foot.

Front of bed is decorated with openwork tableau panels depicting men in miniature scenes which are probably from well-known stories of the time. The left and right panels are mirror images of each other.

Antique bed shows wear appropriate to age and normal use. Measures 84"L x 68"W x 87"T. From China's Fujian province.
