Developed in the early 1900s, stainless steel is a metal alloy containing at least 10.5% chromium and more than 50% iron, with nickel added to help protect against rust and corrosion while adding a subtle, silver-like shine.

CARING FOR STAINLESS STEEL FLATWARE
Stainless is not the same thing as stainproof, but proper cleaning can minimize the occurrence of discoloration or rust spots.
Before using your flatware for the first time, wash it by hand in hot, soapy water and dry thoroughly with a soft towel.
Rinse flatware as soon as possible after use. Prolonged exposure to some foods (salt, vinegar, eggs, mayonnaise, coffee and tea) can permanently stain or damage the finish.
Donít let flatware soak for hours as this can damage the finish.
Use a mild dishwasher detergent, with no bleach or citrus scent. Never use an abrasive cleaner or coarse material to scrub stainless.
Load forks and spoons with handles down, knives with handles up, and avoid crowding.
Select the 'gentle' or 'energy saver' dry cycle.
Use the minimum amount of detergent; too much can leave deposits that result in rust spots or pitting.
To remove rust, rub vigorously with a good all-purpose metal cleaner. Pitting, unfortunately, is permanent.
Stainless steel does not need polishing, but a stainless steel cleaner can restore luster if it diminishes over time.
Make sure flatware is completely dry before storing.
